What do
we do?
Our role is to help people of
all ages with any type of disability or
mental illness get fair treatment.
An advocate can help you get
fair treatment:
-
from government
departments, disability services, other
services and businesses;
-
at work, university,
school or TAFE;
-
with accommodation,
transport and access;
-
with legal, healthcare or
money issues.
We also assist with
systematic advocacy issues and provide
education sessions. The links at the top of
this page provide more information and
details on how DA can help and the services
we offer. Click on these links or contact us
on 1300 365 085 or
da@da.org.au.
What
Disability Advocates
are unable to do.
For resource and funding
reasons we cannot:
-
provide legal advice (but
where appropriate Advocates may help you
get legal advice from a qualified legal
practioner).
-
Provide case work or case
management services (e.g. finding
accommodation, applying for services,
managing services, etc).
-
Provide advocacy services
when a disability support worker / case
worker can provide advocacy support and
they do not have a conflict of interest.
-
Provide advocacy for a
person when a more appropriate service
is available to advocate and assist.
-
Provide advocacy for a
person who wishes to take out an
appended personal violence order at
court against a neighbour or workmate
etc if mediation has not been attempted
to resolve the dispute.
How do I
get advocacy help for myself or someone I
know?
If you are an organisation or service provider already
familiar with our service and wish to refer a person with a disability to
DA, please fill out our online referral
form. Alternatively you can
download the form in
PDF format (requires Adobe Acrobat Reader),
fill it out and fax it back to us, or download
the form as a MS Word
document, fill it out and email or fax it
back to us.
Individuals with a disability and their
family should seek the assistance of an advocate by
contacting us directly.
Background
DA was established in 2007
with the amalgamation of Disability Advocacy
Service Hunter (DASH) and Advocacy Northwest
(ANW). After a number of years working
together, both services believed that they
could provide a better service to more
people with a disability by joining forces.
Combined, both services have 35 years
experience of advocating for people with a
disability.
Disability Advocacy NSW Inc.
is located
in the Hunter, New England and Mid North Coast Regions of NSW Australia and believes that people
with a disability should have the same
rights as other citizens. We aim to
ensure that people with a disability obtain these rights in practice by
advocating with and for them.
